Nasogastric Tube

A nasogastric tube is a soft rubber or plastic tube that is inserted through the nose and into the stomach. The tube is used in the nauseated or post-operative patient to avoid distention of the stomach or for administration of feedings or medicines in patients whose gastrointestinal tracts are working normally but cannot safely swallow. For longer term feeding, a thinner "feeding tube" may be used or a PEG tube (percutaneous endoscopically placed gastrostomy tube) may be placed.
